Joint Pain

Joint pain is a common presentation and can occur in any part of the body.

"Physiotherapy including exercise is considered to have the best evidence as a first line treatment."

Joint pain can be debilitating. It can affect one joint or multiple joints, present as a discomfort, ache, or sharp pain, and can significantly impact functional activity and quality of life.

What causes joint pain?

Joint pain has many causes, including:

  • Previous injury such as a falls, sporting collisions or a motor vehicle accident.
  • Poor biomechanics and/or joint alignment.
  • Diseases such as lupus and fibromyalgia
  • Medication
  • Overuse
  • Muscle weakness
  • During pregnancy

Effective treatment and management of joint pain is complex and multi-disciplinary.

Physiotherapists can assess and diagnose the cause of joint pain. They can refer you for radiological investigations where required, and work as part of mult-disciplinary teams including GP's, Specialist doctors, pharmacists and other health care professionals.

Physiotherapists are able to prescribe therapeutic exercise in the context of complex joint pathology, and adapt this effectively as your symptoms change.
