Telehealth Physiotherapy
Access physiotherapy advice and support wherever you are.
Telehealth allows you to access physiotherapy from home, work or another suitable location without needing to attend one of our clinics.
Through an online consultation, our physiotherapists can discuss your concerns, assess your movement where appropriate, provide advice and develop an exercise or rehabilitation plan to help you work towards your goals.
How Telehealth Can Help
Physiotherapy support that fits around your location and circumstances.
Telehealth provides an alternative way to access physiotherapy when travelling to a clinic is difficult or an online consultation is appropriate for your needs.
Depending on your condition and goals, telehealth may include:
- Discussion of your symptoms, health history and concerns.
- Assessment of movement and function using video.
- Advice about managing pain and improving movement.
- Exercise prescription and rehabilitation guidance.
- Progress reviews and adjustments to your exercise program.
- Advice about returning to everyday activities, work or exercise.
Your physiotherapist will tailor the consultation to your needs and discuss whether further in-person assessment or treatment is recommended.
Is Telehealth Right for Me?
An accessible option for suitable conditions and rehabilitation needs.
Telehealth may be suitable if you:
- Live outside easy travelling distance of our clinics.
- Have difficulty attending an appointment in person.
- Need advice or guidance about an existing condition.
- Are progressing through an exercise or rehabilitation program.
- Need a follow-up consultation to review your progress.
- Would benefit from physiotherapy advice without travelling to a clinic.
Telehealth isn't suitable for every condition or assessment. Some presentations require a physical examination, hands-on treatment or specialised equipment. Your physiotherapist will help determine whether an online consultation is appropriate or whether an in-person appointment would be more beneficial.
What Happens During a Telehealth Appointment?
A personalised physiotherapy consultation, delivered online.
Your telehealth appointment follows a similar process to an in-clinic consultation, with adjustments for the online environment.
Discuss your concerns
Your physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms, health history, current activity and what you would like to achieve.
Assess your movement
Where appropriate, your physiotherapist may ask you to demonstrate particular movements or activities so they can observe your movement and function.
Develop a plan
You'll discuss the assessment findings and agree on practical strategies to help manage your condition and work towards your goals.
Progress your rehabilitation
Your physiotherapist may prescribe exercises, provide advice and arrange follow-up consultations to review your progress.
Preparing for Your Telehealth Appointment
A few simple steps will help you get the most out of your consultation.
Before your appointment, make sure you have:
- A computer, tablet or smartphone with a camera and microphone.
- A reliable internet connection.
- A quiet, private space where you can talk comfortably.
- Enough room to move if your physiotherapist needs to observe particular exercises or movements.
- Any relevant medical reports, imaging results or information about your condition.
We'll provide instructions for joining your online appointment before your consultation. If you have difficulty connecting, contact our reception team for assistance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Find out more about accessing physiotherapy through telehealth.
Do I need a referral for a telehealth appointment?
Generally, no. You can book directly with a physiotherapist. However, some funding arrangements, including Medicare, DVA and certain compensable schemes, have specific referral or approval requirements. Contact our team if you are unsure about your eligibility.
How do I join my telehealth appointment?
We'll send you instructions and the relevant appointment link before your consultation. You'll need a suitable device with a camera and microphone and a reliable internet connection. Follow the instructions to join at your scheduled appointment time.
Do I need any special equipment?
No specialised equipment is usually required. A computer, tablet or smartphone with a camera and microphone is generally sufficient. Your physiotherapist may recommend simple household items or exercise equipment depending on your rehabilitation needs.
Can a physiotherapist assess me properly online?
Many aspects of physiotherapy assessment can be completed through discussion and observation of movement over video. However, telehealth has limitations and cannot replace every form of physical examination or hands-on assessment. Your physiotherapist will determine whether an online assessment provides enough information to guide your care.
Can I receive exercises and a rehabilitation program through telehealth?
Yes. Your physiotherapist can demonstrate and prescribe suitable exercises, provide guidance on technique and adjust your program as your capacity improves. Exercises will be selected according to your condition, goals and available equipment.
Is telehealth suitable for an initial appointment?
It may be suitable for some new clients, depending on their condition and assessment needs. Your physiotherapist will determine whether an online initial consultation is appropriate or whether an in-person appointment would be more beneficial.
How much does a telehealth appointment cost?
Fees depend on the appointment type and applicable funding arrangements. Please contact our reception team to confirm the current fee before booking. You can also visit our Fees & Rebates page for further information.
Can I use Medicare or private health insurance for telehealth?
Rebates or funding may be available depending on your circumstances, referral requirements, insurer and policy. Eligibility varies, so we recommend checking with your funding provider and our reception team before your appointment.
What if I need an in-person appointment instead?
If your physiotherapist determines that an in-person assessment or treatment is needed, they'll discuss the options with you. We can help arrange an appointment at our Coconut Grove or Rosebery clinic, subject to availability.
